CPES 2024 CALL FOR PROPOSALS

As Program Chair for CPES 2024, I am thrilled to extend a warm invitation to submit your proposals for the upcoming 2024 meeting of the Canadian Philosophy of Education Society (CPES). CPES operates under the umbrella of the Canadian Society for the Study of Education (CSSE), which is an integral part of the broader Congress 2024 event, hosted by the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences.
CSSE’s 52nd annual conference is scheduled to span from Wednesday, June 12, 2024 (pre- conference day) to Monday, June 17, 2024 (post-conference day). The conference will be held at McGill University in Montréal, Québec.
CPES 2024 is dedicated to nurturing an atmosphere of scholarly enthusiasm and intellectual vitality, aiming to infuse a spark of excitement into the realm of philosophy of education research. Our commitment to creating a captivating and engaging experience for attendees includes thought-provoking paper sessions, dynamic panels, enriching symposiums and an array of networking opportunities.
Additionally, CPES 2024 is excited to announce a thought-provoking pre-conference with the theme, "Philosophy of Education and the Demands of the Climate Crisis: Timely and Timeless Conversations." This pre-conference will take place on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, at the Centre for the Study of Learning and Performance (CSLP) located at Concordia University in Montreal. A call for proposals for the pre-conference is attached.

the Humanities and Social Sciences is an annual gathering of dozens of Canadian academic organizations at one
university. In addition to individual disciplinary conferences, there are open programs,
headline speakers, and opportunities
to network with scholars from across the country and beyond.
Information on CPES
CPES welcomes proposals that offer a philosophical, theoretical, or critical perspective on topics related to current or recurring aspects of education. Contributions are encouraged from all philosophical traditions and areas of study that employ philosophical methods or sources, including literary criticism, postcolonial critique, critique of fine and performing arts, cultural studies, women’s studies, religious studies, disability studies, political and economic theory, administrative theory, and critical theory. It is further expected that submissions demonstrate relevant engagement with the literature and tradition of philosophy of education. Only proposals that draw primarily on conceptual or theoretical analysis rather than empirical methods will be considered. As the vast majority of the CSSE program is devoted to empirical research, such work should seek inclusion elsewhere.
Presentation Formats
and Authorship Guidelines
CPES sessions normally involve the presentation of single- or multi-authored papers as well as topical panels or symposia.
A “multiple single paper session” is usually scheduled as a 75-minute block with two or three papers in a session. Each paper presentation may have one or more authors, but it should be a single presentation rather than a series of presentations. You do not need to concern yourself with finding presentations that align with yours. The Program Chair will group accepted presentations thematically.
A “panel or symposium” is typically scheduled as a 75-minute block devoted to one topic consisting of a series of shorter individual presentations. If you submit a proposal of this type, you must identify the theme and propose to fill the whole session with multiple papers by predetermined co-presenters, as well as a Chair and Discussants as required for the panel.
If you would like to propose an alternative format, such as a book launch or a working session for instructors of philosophy of education courses, please do not hesitate to share your ideas directly with the Program Chair.
In accord with CSSE regulations, each presenter may be lead author on only one submission per association. This also means that if you are contributing a paper to a panel or symposium session for CPES, you cannot submit a single-authored paper for CPES. Furthermore, since CPES is a group within the Canadian Association for Foundations of Education (CAFE), you cannot be lead author on papers for the CPES program and elsewhere in the CAFE program. You may, however, serve as a Discussant for a different association or be lead author on a paper proposed to another association within CSSE. Graduate students
are especially encouraged to submit proposals. CPES’s annual meeting is an ideal place to establish professional connections and receive collegial and constructive feedback
on your work. CPES members are also reminded to encourage graduate
students at any stage of their
program to submit to CPES or to the CSSE graduate students’ round table and
poster sessions. The regulations
regarding first authorship are different for graduate students, so please consult
the CSSE Call for Proposals for relevant details
regarding these presentation formats.
Submitting a Proposal and Peer Review
The deadline for proposal submissions is October 11, 2023.
All proposals must be submitted through the central CSSE online submission system portal.

- Renew (or purchase) your CSSE membership. The person submitting each proposal must have a current CSSE membership valid until the end of the conference. Your membership is not your registration for the conference. Registration for CSSE and Congress will open in January.
- Upload your proposal and supporting details to the submission platform.
Submitters will be directed to the submission platform from within the Members' Portal. Proposals sent by any other means will be not accepted.
Since CPES is a special interest group of the Canadian Association for Foundations of Education (CAFE), which is in turn a division of CSSE, please clearly mark your submission “CPES” and ensure you select “CPES” in the online membership and submission process. If not, your submission will instead be sent to CAFE. Please note that all authors of accepted presentations must be CSSE members in good standing for the year of the conference.
All proposals to the CPES conference will undergo blind
review by at least two faculty
members or postdoctoral
fellows in a related area. Please ensure your Summary and Abstract have been thoroughly scrubbed of any information
that may identify the author(s) or their affiliated institution(s). I have included the review sheet
below, outlining the criteria for acceptance.
Proposals require a Title, an Abstract (maximum 200 words), and a blinded 3-page (double- spaced)
Summary of the paper or panel, as well as a list of references. The Summary need not follow the social sciences format (question, methods, findings, etc.) that is prevalent elsewhere in CSSE, but it should clearly explain the topic for consideration and describe the approach you will take, including relevant literature. Submissions that deviate from the length and format described on the CSSE website may be rejected without review. Please observe the submission guidelines to ensure your proposal is eligible for consideration.
Peer review of proposals is an important service and essential for maintaining the quality and integrity of the CPES conference. If you are interested in serving as a reviewer, please contact me directly by email with a brief description of your areas of philosophical interest and expertise.
While very much appreciated, peer review is voluntary and reviewing a proposal does not guarantee the reviewer’s proposal will be accepted for the conference.
Instructions for blinding your submission in a Word for PC document:
Click on “File,” then “Check for Issues,” then click on “Inspect Document” and follow the prompts to remove all identifying information that may be hidden in the file’s data.
Instructions for blinding your submission in a Word for Mac document:
Click on “File,” then “Properties,” and “Summary,” and delete the author name.
Once decisions have been finalized for accepting or declining proposals, authors will be contacted and provided with brief reviewer comments. This step normally occurs near the end of January. Due to the complexity of CSSE programming, the decisions of reviewers and the Program Chair are final and cannot be appealed. In addition, by submitting a proposal, it is understood that you intend to attend Congress/CSSE should your proposal be accepted and that you will only withdraw your presentation in extenuating circumstances. Finally, please remember that the number of current members helps determine how many program sessions CPES is allotted – so be sure to renew your CPES membership soon!
